:: Visiting New Island
The furthest West of all the inhabited islands in the Falkland archipelago,
New Island holds some of the most spectacular scenery and has a wonderful
richness of wildlife - for these reasons it is possibly the most sought
after destination in the Falklands
The best way to visit New Island is from the sea...
travellers on private yachts or aboard cruise vessels may visit New Island
easily and we have safe anchorages. Private yacht owners must follow customs
and immigration procedures for entering the Falklands, but once this is
cleared you only need obtain permission from the land owner to come ashore.
Certain cruise vessels travelling to South Georgia and the Antarctic regularly
call in at New Island between October and March, and although time ashore
is very limited, this is also a good way to see the Islands.
Presently we do not have a Government airstrip and therefore air travel
is limited to residents and researchers only, due to a restricting agreement
with the Falkland Islands Government and the MOD for helicopter travel.
We hope to re-establish normal Government air service to New Island in
the near future.
